Did you know that all almonds grown in the USA are required by the USDA to be pasteurized? This includes ALL raw and/or organic almonds!! I was shocked to find this out.
According to a court ruling in 2007, all US produced almonds must be either steam pasteurized or treated with propylene oxide. Both kill beneficial nutrients and enzymes. I suppose if given the choice, I’d go with steam pasteurization but the fact is I don’t have a choice and I’d rather my raw almonds remain untouched by steam or chemicals thanks!
The only source I know of for truly raw, organic almonds is at this time is Azure Standard’s Raw, Organic Spanish Almonds. They are delicious! I can definitely taste a difference between these and the California grown raw, organic almonds. They aren’t cheap-$6.50 per lb., but it’s worth it to me. I consider almonds to be a ‘treat’, well worth the cost for chemical-free, and nutrient-rich!
