I’m Astaire Roorda, aka Chic Organic Mama to three daughters; ages
7 9, 6 8, and 5 6 . I love cooking delicious, preservative/additive-free, local/ organic food for my family! All the recipes here are dairy, egg, coconut, soy, and peanut free (even the ‘creamy’ ones)!
My cooking adventures began at an early age. I began baking when I was 9 yrs. old; old enough to make a mess in the kitchen, but young enough to not clean up very well! Thanks to my amazing mother who not only encouraged me to cook, but also set an example herself of cooking tasty meals from scratch, my love for cooking grew. Having a great foundation in the basics of cooking has really helped me adapt and create recipes.
My journey to chic organic mama-hood began when my oldest daughter (who is now
6 9) developed excema as a baby. After learning that her excema was caused by allergies to dairy products and eggs, I began to overhaul our menu.
Initially, I was completely overwhelmed by the idea of cooking without dairy products, eggs, peanut butter, or coconut (she is allergic to peanuts and coconut products as well). But thanks to a great foundation in the basics of cooking, support from family and friends, and helpful allergy resources, I became adept at cooking delicious, allergy-friendly meals for our family.
Through all the informal research I did to help my daughter with her food allergies, I became convinced that organic food is extremely important. So important in fact, that two years ago, I decided to gradually make the switch to 100% organic foods. My goal was to do so without spending any more on groceries than we already were for non-organic groceries ($700 per. mo. ) Although I was already cooking much of our food from scratch, this meant even more cooking. Although I love cooking, I don’t want to spend most of my time in the kitchen. I also love going out and exploring museums, parks, etc. . with my kids.
Over the past
two three years, I’ve discovered ways to prepare delicious, organic meals for my family everyday while maintaining a reasonable grocery budget AND still finding plenty of time to get out of the house!
I’m not 100% there. Our condiments plus a few other miscellaneous items are not organic. But I’ll get there eventually!
Thanks for visiting my blog and joining me in my journey towards 100% organic cooking! I hope you find some tips and inspiration for your dairy-free, egg-free, peanut-free, coconut-free, and soy-free organic cooking ventures and don’t forget to post a comment if you have something to share!
Happy Cooking (and eating)!
